Shali River is an important tributary of Damodar River that drains the northern part of Bankura district. It originates a few miles west of Kora hill, halfway between Mejia and Bankura, and joins the Damodar at Somsar village under Indas Block
A tributary of Dwarakeswar, flows by the side of Mundamala Ghat in Bishnupur. Although this river gets tired of carrying gravel and sand, it comes back to life in the rainy season. Mundamala Ghat is located on the banks of this river. Its history is quite exciting. Bargi Leader Bhaskar Pandit looted Garh Mandaran and entered Bishnupur via Kotulpur, Kumbhashhal and Jaipur. He is determined to plunder the moat of Mundamala Ghat and the rows of cannons arranged on the hills. In the same time Raja Gopalsinghdeva was so preoccupied with Harinam that he forgot to resist the enemy. The clever Bhaskar Pandit crossed the Dwarakeswar river in the dark of night, cut a ditch and tried to grab a cannon. There will be no obstacle to enter Bishnupur by occupying Cannon. He started working but he was not successful. A 12 years handsome boy rushed with white horse towards Mundamala ghat. Then the cannon fire started. The people of Bishnupur used to chant the name of Madan Mohan with concentration. Thousands of people took to the streets with the king, clapping their hands and calling Madan Mohan. Last night the sky and the wind shook and the terrible cannon 'Dalmardan' roared. The Bargis fled.
"Bishnupur, as the new culture – administrative capital of the Malla chieftains, was imagined as an artistic prototype of Vrindaban. Lalbandh is one of the water bodies which are spread across the landscape of the Temple Town. Fish abounds in the brimming water of the water body. This water body, situated as it is in the middle of the town, is home to a number of rare species of migratory birds. The rippling waves of the Lalbandh don a hypnotizing aura of magical enchantment in the crimson hues of the setting Sun."
