Bishnupur Mela is an annual reunion fair of handicraft & cultural richness of region which is being held in the Temple Town Bishnupur since 1988. This traditional Mela celebrates not only the cultural richness, it also venerates the traditional Music, Bishnupur Gharana and dance and provides the visitors a glimpse of the Bengal Cultural heritage. The 1st Bishnupur Mela was arranged in the year, 1988 at Raj Darbar near Lalji-Jorbungalo premises in the last week of December, 23rd to 27th. The Mallaraj Dynasty, Bishnupur under West Bengal is at an approximate distance of 150 K.M. from Kolkata. It organized with contemporary innovation by an organizing committee. A good nos. of eminent person of Bishnupur was the committee member, Sabhachipati of Bankura Zilla Parishad adorned the post of Sabhapati, D.M., Bishnupur was the functional president and SDO, Bishnupur was the Member Secretary of Ist Bishnupur Mela. Some Renowned person of Bishnupur Gharana, Culturist, Literaturist of Bishnupur had been participated with Bishnupur Mela since the inception 1988 to 2021. Dr. Pabitra Sarkar, VC of Rabindravarati University inaugurate the Bishnupur Mela 1989. The legend of Rabindra Sangeet Suchitra Mitra, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Surasamrat V. Balsara, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan performed and grace the occasion. Since 1988, the inception of Bishnupur Mela, most famous musical person came and performed between 23rd to 27th every year. Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Ustad Ashis Khan, Bapi Lahiri, Amit Kumar, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Padowal, Anupam Roy, Rupankar Bagchi, Charankobi Mukunda Das, Dr.Anup Ghosal, Haimanti Sukla, Saikat Mitra, Sibaji Chattopadhyay, Nachiketa Chakraborty, Folk artist Prahallad Bramhachari, Lopamudra Mitra, Iman Chakraborty also grace the Bishnupur Mela. Renowned Clasical dance artist Samjukta Panigrahi, Dona Gangopadhyay, Bihu of Asam, Manipuri Dance & other artist from ditterence state performed in this Mela. Shrutinatak by Partha Ghosh-Gouri Ghosh, Jagannath Basu-Urmimala Basu played in the Mela. The legend artist Soumitra Chattopadhyay came in the year 2003 and inaugurate the Bishnupur Mela.
The traditional festival Bishnupur Mela is the perfect blend of past and the present tradition and is characterized by exhibition and sale of unique handicraft, sculpture, handloom, Baluchari Sharee and in other hand it promotes Tourism of Bishnupur and Bishnupur Musical Gharana. Mela held every year in very favourable season of Tourism. During the month of December-January, the tourist flow is maximum in comparison of others season.
