Bishnupur Acharjya jogesh Chandra Purakriti Bhawan is the only government museum of art and archaeology in this district. In the year 1951 a group of young energetic local man established this museum and sought for affiliation from Bangiyo Sahitya Parisad, Calcutta in order to legitimize its collection work. Long before the inception of Purakriti Bhawan renowned scholar Acharjya Jogesh Chandra Roy tried his best to establish a museum in Bankura District but he was not succeed. In 1954 the museum of Bangiyo Sahityo Parisad, Bishnupur Branch was named Acharjya Jogesh Chandra Putakriti Bhawan after the name of Jogesh Chandra Roy Vidyanidhi, the famous scholar of this district as well as of Bengal.
The chief aim and objective of this museum was to carter the spirit of research among the students and scholars of this area and preserve the history and culture of this district. Since then at least for fifty years the members of the museum tried their level best to build up this museum under the able guidance of Sri Maniklal Sinha, its founder Secretary and Sri Gangagobinda Ray, its founder President. The q2amembers of the museum travelled from village to village and collected specimens of art and archaeology like sculptures, coins, ancient pot, manuscripts, miniature paintings, folk art objects. Now the nature of collections is wonderfully diverse and displayed in five important galleries. If anyone wants to know the cultural history of this district he/she should visit this museum.
